About Auckland Zoo

Auckland Zoo, established in 1922, is a 16.35-hectare (40.4-acre) zoological garden located in Western Springs, Auckland, New Zealand. It is the largest zoo and wildlife conservation center in New Zealand, housing over 1,400 animals representing more than 135 species.

The zoo features several specialized exhibits, including Te Wao Nui, which showcases New Zealand's unique wildlife and is divided into six distinct ecological areas. The facility is actively involved in breeding programs for endangered species, particularly focusing on native New Zealand wildlife such as kiwi, tuatara, and Archey's frog. The Pridelands exhibit recreates an African savanna environment, housing lions, giraffes, zebras, and rhinoceros.

Among its notable features is the South East Asia Jungle Track, completed in 2020, which provides habitats for orangutans, siamang gibbons, and tigers. The zoo also maintains the Australia Centre, featuring various marsupials and reptiles native to Australia.

Auckland Zoo participates in numerous international conservation programs and operates its own Conservation Fund, which supports wildlife protection projects both locally and globally. The facility is accredited by the Zoo and Aquarium Association (ZAA) and maintains high standards of animal welfare. Educational programs offered by the zoo include guided tours, school visits, and holiday programs, serving approximately 700,000 visitors annually.
