About Maré Island
Maré Island is one of the Loyalty Islands in New Caledonia, a French special collectivity in the South Pacific. Located approximately 120 kilometers east of Grande Terre, New Caledonia's main island, Maré covers an area of 642 square kilometers (248 square miles), making it the second-largest island in the Loyalty Islands archipelago. The island is of coral origin and features a raised limestone plateau with cliffs rising to about 130 meters above sea level.

The island's population is approximately 5,600 inhabitants, with the majority being indigenous Kanak people. The main town and administrative center is Tadine, located on the western coast. The local language spoken is Nengone, though French is the official language. The economy is primarily based on agriculture, particularly the cultivation of avocados, coconuts, and yams, as well as fishing and small-scale tourism.
Notable attractions include Warrior's Leap (Le Saut du Guerrier), a dramatic natural formation where, according to legend, a warrior jumped across a deep chasm to escape his enemies. The island is also known for its pristine beaches, particularly along the southern coast, and natural swimming pools formed in the coral limestone. Trou de Bone (Bone Hole) is a significant archaeological site where ancient human remains and artifacts have been discovered.
The island's unique ecosystem includes endemic plant species and extensive areas of primary forest. Transportation to Maré is primarily by air through La Roche Airport, with regular flights from Nouméa, or by passenger ferry service. The island's infrastructure includes basic amenities such as medical facilities, schools, and a road network connecting major settlements.
