About Lifou Island

Lifou Island, the largest and most populous of the Loyalty Islands in New Caledonia, covers an area of 466 square miles (1,207 square kilometers). Located approximately 190 kilometers east of New Caledonia's main island, Grande Terre, it is characterized by its coral limestone formation, creating dramatic cliffs and caves. The island's indigenous Melanesian inhabitants, known as Kanaks, refer to the island as "Drehu" in their local language.

The island features several notable natural attractions. Jinek Bay is renowned for its pristine coral reefs and marine biodiversity, while Notre Dame de Lourdes Chapel sits atop dramatic cliffs offering panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean. The Vanilla Plantation in Mou showcases traditional vanilla cultivation methods, representing an important part of the local economy. The impressive limestone formations of Jokin Cliffs rise dramatically from the ocean, creating spectacular viewpoints.

Lifou is divided into three traditional districts: Wetr in the north, Gaica in the center, and Lossi in the south. The main administrative center, Wé, located in the Wetr district, serves as the island's primary commercial hub and houses the local government offices. The island's infrastructure includes Lifou Airport, which provides regular connections to Nouméa.

The island's economy is primarily based on agriculture, tourism, and fishing. Major agricultural products include copra, vanilla, and sweet potatoes. Traditional Kanak culture remains strong on Lifou, with customary laws and practices still governing many aspects of daily life. The island maintains a tropical climate with average temperatures ranging between 22-27°C (72-81°F) throughout the year, and its unique geological formation as a raised coral atoll has resulted in the absence of rivers or streams, making groundwater the primary freshwater source.
