About Terminal 1

Terminal 1 is the oldest passenger terminal at Cancún International Airport, primarily serving domestic flights within Mexico. Originally constructed in the 1970s as the airport's main terminal, it has undergone several renovations to accommodate increasing passenger traffic.

The terminal handles operations for major Mexican carriers including Volaris, Viva Aerobus, and Aeromar. It features basic passenger amenities including check-in counters, security screening, baggage claim areas, and limited retail and dining options. The facility connects to the airport's central transportation hub via covered walkways.

Terminal 1 processes approximately 3-4 million passengers annually, representing roughly 10-12% of the airport's total traffic.

The terminal operates with Gates 1-8 and can accommodate narrow-body aircraft such as the Boeing 737 and Airbus A320 family. Ground transportation options include taxis, rental cars, and shuttle services to Cancún's Hotel Zone and surrounding destinations. The terminal maintains separate arrival and departure levels, with immigration and customs facilities for passengers connecting from international flights.

Security protocols include standard TSA-equivalent screening procedures and baggage inspection systems consistent with Mexican aviation regulations.

Temporarily closed for reconstruction after Hurricane Wilma, the terminal resumed operations between 2013 and 2018. The terminal is currently undergoing a comprehensive remodeling and expansion, with reopening planned for 2026.
