About Guatemala City
Guatemala City (officially Nueva Guatemala de la Asunción) is the capital and largest city of Guatemala, as well as the most populous city in Central America. It serves as the country's political, cultural, economic, and financial center.

The city is situated in a mountain valley called the Valle de la Ermita, at an elevation of approximately 1,500 meters (4,921 feet) above sea level in the south-central part of the country.
Guatemala City was officially founded on January 2, 1776, following the destruction of the former capital, Santiago de los Caballeros de Guatemala (present-day Antigua Guatemala), by a series of devastating earthquakes in 1773–1774, known as the Santa Marta earthquakes. The colonial authorities decided to relocate the capital to its current site, which was deemed more geologically stable at the time.
The city is administratively divided into 25 zones, a unique urban planning system designed by engineer Raúl Aguilar Batres in the mid-20th century. The zones are arranged in a spiral pattern based on the cardinal points of the city center.
The population of the city proper is approximately 1.2 million, while the greater metropolitan area (known as Gran Guatemala) is home to an estimated 3.2 to 5 million people, representing roughly one-third of Guatemala's total population.
The city's climate is classified as subtropical highland (Köppen: Cwb), characterized by mild temperatures throughout the year, with an average annual temperature of around 17–19 °C (63–66 °F). The rainy season runs from May to October.
La Aurora International Airport, located in Zone 13, is the main international airport serving the city and the country. It is the busiest airport in Central America by passenger traffic.
Notable landmarks include the National Palace of Culture, the Metropolitan Cathedral, and the Plaza de la Constitución (the central square). The city also contains several archaeological museums, including the National Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology, which houses one of the most significant pre-Columbian Maya collections in the world.
Guatemala City accounts for a substantial share of Guatemala's GDP, concentrating the majority of the country's industrial output, banking sector, and service industry within its metropolitan boundaries.
