About Bora Bora
Bora Bora, often referred to as the "Pearl of the Pacific", is one of the most famous islands in French Polynesia, located approximately 230 km (143 miles) northwest of Tahiti. The island encompasses a total land area of 30.6 km2 (11.8 sq mi), dominated by the remnants of an extinct volcano rising to two peaks, Mount Otemanu (727 m/2,385 ft) and Mount Pahia (661 m/2,168 ft). The island was formed approximately 4 million years ago through volcanic activity.
The island is surrounded by a spectacular lagoon and a barrier reef, creating one of the world's most beautiful natural harbors. The lagoon's crystal-clear waters, featuring countless shades of blue, host a rich marine ecosystem including rays, sharks, and colorful tropical fish. The barrier reef is dotted with small islets called motus, many of which now host luxury resorts. The lagoon's average depth is 40 meters, and its waters maintain a year-round temperature between 75°F and 85°F (24-29°C).
Tourism forms the backbone of Bora Bora's economy, with the island being internationally renowned for its overwater bungalows, first introduced in the 1970s. The permanent population of approximately 11,000 inhabitants primarily works in the tourism sector, which attracts over 150,000 visitors annually. The island features more than 15 luxury resorts, including world-famous brands like Four Seasons, St. Regis, and InterContinental. The main settlement, Vaitape, houses about half of the island's population and serves as its commercial center.
During World War II, the island served as a strategic U.S. military supply base, known as "Operation Bobcat," with remnants of the operation still visible today, including the original airstrip that has been converted into the current Bora Bora Airport (BOB). The base, established in 1942, housed approximately 6,000 American troops and included eight massive naval guns positioned around the island. Today, several of these guns remain in their original positions and serve as historical landmarks.
The island's climate is tropical, with two distinct seasons: a dry season from May to October and a wet season from November to April. The average annual temperature is 30°C (86°F). Bora Bora's official language is French, though Tahitian is widely spoken, and the local currency is the French Pacific Franc (XPF). The island can be accessed via air from Tahiti's Faa'a International Airport, with flights lasting approximately 45 minutes.
