Morzine is a commune located in the Haute-Savoie department in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of southeastern France. Situated in the Dranse valley at an elevation of approximately 3,280 feet (1,000 meters), the town serves as a major alpine resort destination in the French Alps.
The commune is part of Portes du Soleil, one of the largest ski areas in the world, which encompasses twelve resorts across the Franco-Swiss border. During winter months, the town functions primarily as a ski resort, attracting winter sports enthusiasts from across Europe and beyond. The season typically runs from December through April, depending on snow conditions.
In summer, Morzine transforms into a center for mountain biking and hiking activities. The resort hosts numerous trail networks and has gained recognition as a venue for international mountain biking competitions. Pleney and Super-Morzine serve as the two main lift-access points connecting the town to surrounding mountain areas.
The town maintains its traditional Savoyard alpine architecture, featuring characteristic wooden chalets and slate roofs. Morzine's history as a mountain settlement dates back several centuries, though its development as a tourist destination accelerated significantly in the mid-20th century with the expansion of ski infrastructure.
