About Meribel
Méribel is a ski resort located in the Tarentaise Valley in the French Alps, situated in the Savoie department. The resort lies at the geographic center of the Trois Vallées (Three Valleys) ski area, the largest interconnected ski domain in the world.
The resort was founded in 1938 by British Colonel Peter Lindsay, who discovered the valley while searching for an ideal location to establish a ski resort. Méribel is divided into several areas, with Méribel Centre positioned at approximately 1,450 meters elevation and Méribel-Mottaret at 1,750 meters. The resort enforces strict architectural regulations requiring all buildings to be constructed in traditional Savoyard chalet style with wood and stone.
Méribel hosted several events during the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville, including women's alpine skiing competitions at Roc de Fer and ice hockey matches at the Méribel Ice Palace. The resort provides access to over 600 kilometers of marked ski runs across the Trois Vallées area and offers 150 kilometers of slopes within its immediate territory.
The local economy depends primarily on winter tourism, though summer activities including hiking and mountain biking have grown in recent years. The resort is accessible via the nearby towns of Moûtiers and Albertville, with the closest international airports located in Geneva, Lyon, and Chambéry. Year-round population remains small, but the resort accommodates thousands of visitors during peak winter season.
