About Avoriaz
Avoriaz is a car-free ski resort located in the Haute-Savoie department of the French Alps at an elevation of 5,900 feet (1,800 meters). Built in the 1960s by French architect Jean Vuarnet and developer Gérard Brémond, the resort was designed to blend with its natural mountain environment. The resort is situated above the town of Morzine and forms part of the expansive Portes du Soleil ski area, one of the largest interconnected ski domains in the world.
The architecture of Avoriaz is distinctive, featuring cedar-clad buildings with angular designs that mirror the surrounding peaks. Transportation within the resort relies on horse-drawn sleighs and electric vehicles, maintaining its pedestrian-only policy. The resort offers access to over 650 kilometers of ski runs across the Franco-Swiss border.
Avoriaz hosts the annual Avoriaz Fantastic Film Festival, established in 1973, which celebrates science fiction, fantasy, and horror cinema. The resort includes the Aquariaz water park, a tropical-themed facility with pools, slides, and a spa. Winter activities extend beyond skiing to include snowboarding, snow biking, and ice climbing. The village center features shops, restaurants, and accommodations ranging from apartments to hotels, all constructed in the characteristic 1960s modernist style.
