Addis Ababa is the capital and largest city of Ethiopia. Its name means "new flower" in Amharic. The city also holds the status of a chartered city, which makes it both a city and a state within the Ethiopian federal system.

Emperor Menelik II and Empress Taytu Betul founded the city in 1886, choosing a site near the Filwoha hot springs. Before that, the imperial court had been based on the nearby Entoto hills. From 1936 to 1941, during the Italian occupation, Addis Ababa served as the capital of Italian East Africa. Ethiopian rule was restored in 1941, and Emperor Haile Selassie returned to the city.
The city lies at the foot of Mount Entoto at an elevation of about 2,355 metres (7,726 ft), which makes it one of the highest capital cities in the world. It has a subtropical highland climate with mild temperatures throughout the year. The city covers about 527 square kilometres.
Addis Ababa is often called the "political capital of Africa." It hosts the headquarters of the African Union and, before that, of the Organisation of African Unity, which was founded there in 1963. The city also hosts the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, along with many embassies and international organisations.
Well-known landmarks include Holy Trinity Cathedral, where Emperor Haile Selassie is buried, and St. George's Cathedral, which was built to mark the Ethiopian victory at the Battle of Adwa in 1896. The National Museum of Ethiopia holds the fossil skeleton of an early human relative known as "Lucy." The Merkato district is home to one of the largest open-air markets in Africa. Addis Ababa University, founded in 1950, is the country's oldest and largest university.
Addis Ababa Bole International Airport is the main hub of Ethiopian Airlines. In 2015 the city opened the Addis Ababa Light Rail, the first light rail system in sub-Saharan Africa. The city is also linked to the port of Djibouti by an electrified railway.
