About Shanghai Pudong International Airport

Shanghai Pudong International Airport (IATA: PVG, ICAO: ZSPD) is one of two international airports serving Shanghai, China. It is in the Pudong New Area, about 30 kilometres east of the city centre, on the coast of the East China Sea. The airport is run by the Shanghai Airport Authority. It is the main international gateway to Shanghai, while Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport mostly handles domestic and regional flights.

The airport opened on 1 October 1999 and took over most of Shanghai's international flights from Hongqiao.

Pudong has two main passenger terminals and a satellite concourse. Terminal 1, designed by French architect Paul Andreu, opened with the airport in 1999. Terminal 2 opened in March 2008. In September 2019 a satellite concourse with two linked parts, S1 and S2, opened to add more gates. It is connected to the main terminals by an automated people mover and is described as one of the largest standalone satellite terminals in the world. A third terminal is being built. The airport has five runways, the most recent of which came into use in 2015.

The airport is the main hub for China Eastern Airlines and its subsidiary Shanghai Airlines. It is also a base for Juneyao Air and Spring Airlines. Pudong is one of the busiest cargo airports in the world, and several international logistics companies run regional hubs there. In 2019 it handled about 76 million passengers and over 3.6 million tonnes of cargo, making it one of the busiest airports in mainland China.

Ground transport includes the Shanghai Maglev Train, which began commercial service in 2004 and connects the airport with Longyang Road station. Line 2 of the Shanghai Metro also serves the airport, and the Shanghai Airport Link Line connects Pudong with Hongqiao International Airport.
