About Shanghai Metro

The Shanghai Metro is a rapid transit system serving Shanghai, China. It opened in 1993, which made Shanghai the third city in mainland China with a metro system, after Beijing and Tianjin. The system is run by the Shanghai Shentong Metro Group. It has 19 lines and 508 stations, and it is one of the longest metro systems in the world by route length.

The first section of Line 1 opened in 1993. The network then grew quickly, especially in the years leading up to Expo 2010, which Shanghai hosted. Expansion slowed after 2010 but continued, with new lines and extensions added to reach the city's suburban districts.

Most lines are numbered and have their own color. Line 4 runs as a full loop around the city center. Line 11 extends past the city limits to Kunshan in Jiangsu Province, making it one of the first metro lines in China to cross a provincial boundary.

Several lines are fully automated and run without drivers, including Line 10 and some of the newer lines.

Fares depend on how far a passenger travels. Passengers can pay with single-journey tickets, the Shanghai Public Transportation Card, or QR codes on mobile apps. Shanghai Metro is one of the busiest metro systems in the world by annual ridership.
