About Guangzhou Metro
The Guangzhou Metro is the rapid transit system of Guangzhou, the capital of Guangdong Province in China. It is operated by the state-owned Guangzhou Metro Group Co., Ltd. The network has 19 lines and 399 stations, and it is one of the busiest metro systems in the world by annual ridership.
The first section of Line 1 opened on 28 June 1997. This made Guangzhou the fourth city in mainland China to have a metro system, after Beijing, Tianjin and Shanghai.
The network grew quickly in the 2000s and 2010s. Much of this work was done ahead of the 2010 Asian Games, which Guangzhou hosted. In November 2010 the Zhujiang New Town Automated People Mover opened, serving the city's central business district. The Guangfo Line also opened that year and links Guangzhou with the neighbouring city of Foshan. It was the first intercity metro line in China. Lines 4, 5 and 6 use linear induction motor trains. Lines 18 and 22 have a design speed of 160 km/h, which makes them among the fastest metro lines in the country.
Fares are based on distance travelled. Passengers can pay with the Lingnan Pass (Yang Cheng Tong) contactless card, single-journey tickets or mobile QR codes.
