About Beijing Subway
The Beijing Subway is the rapid transit network of Beijing Municipality, the capital of the People's Republic of China. It has 30 lines and 541 stations. These include 25 rapid transit lines, two airport rail links, one maglev line and two light rail tram lines. It is the oldest metro system in mainland China and one of the longest and busiest in the world.
Construction of the first line began on 1 July 1965. The line was designed for both civilian transport and civil defense. It began operating on 1 October 1969, but for its first years it carried mainly authorized passengers, and it opened fully to the public in the 1970s. The network grew slowly until the early 2000s. Expansion then sped up as Beijing prepared for the 2008 Summer Olympics. Line 10, the Olympic Branch of Line 8 and the Capital Airport Express were among the lines opened in 2008.
Line 2 follows the route of Beijing's former city walls. Line 10 is one of the longest underground loop lines in the world. Line S1, the maglev line, serves Mentougou District in western Beijing. The two tram lines are the Xijiao line and the Yizhuang T1 line. The Daxing Airport Express opened on 26 September 2019 and serves Beijing Daxing International Airport. Its trains have a maximum operating speed of 160 km/h.
Several companies operate the network. The largest are the Beijing Mass Transit Railway Operation Corporation and Beijing MTR Corporation, a joint venture that includes Hong Kong's MTR Corporation.
From 2007 to 2014, most lines charged a flat fare of 2 yuan. On 28 December 2014, a distance-based fare system replaced it, with a starting fare of 3 yuan for trips up to 6 km. The airport rail links have separate fares. Passengers can pay with the Yikatong contactless smart card or with mobile QR codes. On 12 July 2019, the system set a single-day ridership record of about 13.75 million passengers. All stations have security screening.
