Quebec is Canada's largest province by area and second most populous, with a total population of approximately 9 million inhabitants as of 2025. The province encompasses 1,667,441 square kilometers and is located in northeastern North America, bordering Ontario, Atlantic provinces, and four U.S. states.
Montreal serves as Quebec's largest city with 1,762,949 residents within the city proper and 4,291,732 in the Greater Montreal area according to the 2021 census. It ranks as the world's second-largest French-speaking city after Paris. Quebec City, the provincial capital, has a population of 549,459 with its metropolitan area containing 839,311 inhabitants. The city was founded in 1608 by Samuel de Champlain and serves as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Other major urban centers include Laval with approximately 422,993 residents, Gatineau (276,245), Longueuil (239,700), and Sherbrooke (161,323). About 80% of Quebec's population resides in the Saint Lawrence River valley in the southern portion of the province. French is the sole official language, spoken by 94.6% of the population as a common language and by 80% as a mother tongue. Population density averages 6.02 people per square kilometer, though most inhabitants concentrate in urban areas along the Saint Lawrence corridor.
