Roads in New Brunswick

Highway System

New Brunswick maintains an extensive network of provincial highways totaling approximately 18,000 kilometers. The Trans-Canada Highway (Route 2) is the province's primary east-west corridor, running 526 kilometers from the Quebec border near Edmundston to the Nova Scotia border near Aulac. This four-lane divided highway serves as the main arterial route connecting major population centers.

Route 1 runs through southern New Brunswick from the Maine border at St. Stephen to the Nova Scotia border near Amherst. It passes through Saint John and serves as an important alternative to the Trans-Canada Highway for coastal communities.

Regional Routes

Route 8 connects Fredericton to Miramichi and extends north to Bathurst, serving central and northern regions. Route 11 follows the eastern coast along the Gulf of Saint Lawrence from Shediac to Campbellton. Route 15 provides access to the Acadian Peninsula and tourist destinations along the northeastern coast.

The province signed agreements in 1997 to transfer approximately 3,500 kilometers of secondary highways to municipal control. Provincial highways are maintained by the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure. Winter maintenance includes snow removal and ice control operations from November through April.
