Belgium, officially the Kingdom of Belgium, is a country in Western Europe. It borders the Netherlands to the north, Germany to the east, Luxembourg to the southeast and France to the south, and has a coastline on the North Sea to the northwest. It covers an area of 30,689 square kilometres and has a population of about 11.86 million. The capital and largest metropolitan area is Brussels.

Belgium is a federal constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary system. The country is divided into three regions: Flanders, Wallonia and the Brussels-Capital Region. It also has three linguistic communities: Flemish, French and German-speaking. Dutch, French and German are its official languages. Dutch is mainly spoken in Flanders and French in Wallonia, while Brussels is officially bilingual. The country changed from a unitary state to a federal state through a series of constitutional reforms between 1970 and 1993.

Belgium became independent from the United Kingdom of the Netherlands after the Belgian Revolution of 1830. Leopold I became the first King of the Belgians in 1831, and the Treaty of London recognised the country's independence and neutrality in 1839. From 1885 to 1908, the Congo Free State was the personal possession of King Leopold II. It then became the Belgian colony of the Belgian Congo until it gained independence in 1960. Germany occupied Belgium during both the First and Second World Wars. King Philippe has been the head of state since 2013.

Belgium was a founding member of the European Coal and Steel Community, the European Economic Community, NATO and the Benelux union. Brussels hosts several major institutions of the European Union, as well as the headquarters of NATO.

Belgium uses the euro as its currency. Its economy is highly developed and depends heavily on trade. The Port of Antwerp-Bruges is one of the largest seaports in Europe. The country's highest point is the Signal de Botrange, at 694 metres. The Scheldt and the Meuse are its main rivers.

Belgium is known for its beer, chocolate and comics. In 2016, UNESCO added Belgian beer culture to its list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
