Lusaka is the capital and largest city of Zambia, located in the southern part of the central plateau at an elevation of 1,279 meters (4,196 feet) above sea level. With a population of approximately 3.5 million (2019 estimate), it serves as the country's commercial and administrative center.
The city was founded in 1905 as a railway station on the Great North Road and was named after the Lusaka village headman. It became the capital of Northern Rhodesia in 1935 and subsequently the capital of independent Zambia in 1964.
Lusaka hosts several significant institutions including the University of Zambia (established 1966), the Lusaka National Museum, and the National Assembly.
