Ownership History
Jeffrey Epstein, an American financier, purchased Little Saint James in 1998 for approximately $7.95 million. He subsequently acquired the adjacent Great Saint James island in 2016 for $17.5 million. Under Epstein's ownership, the island underwent significant development, including the construction of multiple buildings and structures.
Infrastructure and Development
The island features several notable structures. The main residence is a large villa-style complex with multiple bedrooms and bathrooms. A distinctive blue-and-white striped temple-like structure, officially described as a music pavilion, became one of the most recognizable features of the island. The property also includes a helipad, dock facilities, and various outbuildings. Epstein invested substantial resources in developing infrastructure, including bringing utilities and construction materials to the remote location.
Legal Controversy and Investigations
Little Saint James became central to federal investigations into Jeffrey Epstein following his 2019 arrest on sex trafficking charges. Multiple individuals alleged that illegal activities occurred on the island. The property was searched by federal authorities in August 2019 as part of their criminal investigation.
Following Epstein's death in August 2019, the island became part of his estate. Victims filed civil lawsuits seeking compensation, with the island representing a significant asset in the estate's holdings. The U.S. Virgin Islands government also filed suit against the Epstein estate regarding activities on the island.
Post-2019 Status
In 2021, the Epstein estate announced plans to sell both Little Saint James and Great Saint James to help fund the compensation program for victims. The islands were listed for sale at $125 million combined. Local authorities and environmental groups raised concerns about future development and access to the properties.
