About Phu Quoc

Phu Quoc is Vietnam's largest island, located in the Gulf of Thailand. The island spans approximately 227 square miles (589 square kilometers) and administratively belongs to Kien Giang Province. In 2021, the island was granted city status, making it Vietnam's first island city.

The island is situated 45 kilometers from the Vietnamese mainland and only 4 kilometers from the coast of Cambodia. Duong Dong, the main town and administrative center, is located on the west coast. The island's population has grown significantly in recent years, reaching over 180,000 residents as of 2020.

Historically, Phu Quoc was an important strategic location during the Vietnam War and housed a prisoner camp. The island's economy traditionally relied on fishing, agriculture, and the production of fish sauce (nuoc mam), which is still considered some of the best in Vietnam. The island is also famous for its black pepper cultivation and pearl farms.

Tourism has become a major economic driver since the early 2000s. The island features the Phu Quoc International Airport, opened in 2012, which has significantly increased accessibility. Notable attractions include Bai Sao Beach, known for its white sand, the Phu Quoc National Park covering more than 50% of the island, and the world's longest over-sea cable car connecting to Hon Thom Island, stretching 7.9 kilometers.

The island's climate is tropical with two distinct seasons: dry season (November to April) and rainy season (May to October). The average annual temperature is around 27°C (80.6°F). In 2006, Phu Quoc and surrounding islands were recognized as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve due to their diverse ecosystem, including tropical forests, coral reefs, and seagrass beds.
