About Tashkent
Tashkent is the capital and largest city of Uzbekistan, with a population of approximately 3.1 million people (2024). Located in northeastern Uzbekistan, it is the most populous city in Central Asia and serves as the country's primary industrial, cultural, and educational center.
The city's history spans over 2,200 years, though much of its historical architecture was destroyed in the 1966 earthquake. Following this disaster, Tashkent was rebuilt with wide boulevards, modern buildings, and extensive public spaces, giving it a distinctive Soviet-era character. The city lies in an oasis near the Chirchik River and is surrounded by the western spurs of the Tian Shan Mountains.
Notable landmarks include the Hazrat Imam Complex, which houses the world's oldest Quran, and the iconic Tashkent Tower, standing at 375 meters. The historic Chorsu Bazaar, operating since the medieval period, remains a vital trading hub. Cultural institutions include the State Museum of History of Uzbekistan, Fine Arts Museum, and the Navoi Opera and Ballet Theatre.
Tashkent boasts Central Asia's first underground rapid transit system, opened in 1977. The city is a major transportation hub, with Islam Karimov International Airport connecting it to numerous international destinations. The city's economy is diverse, encompassing manufacturing, cotton processing, and machinery production.
Education plays a significant role in Tashkent, with over 30 universities, including the Westminster International University and the National University of Uzbekistan. The city experiences a continental climate with hot summers and mild winters, receiving annual precipitation of around 440mm.
