About Roads in Indiana
Indiana maintains an extensive highway system managed primarily by the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT). The state's road network includes Interstate highways, U.S. Routes, and state roads that connect cities and rural areas throughout the region.
The Interstate system in Indiana consists of several major routes. Interstate 65 runs north-south through Indianapolis, connecting the state to Kentucky and Lake Michigan. Interstate 70 crosses east-west, also passing through the capital. Interstate 69 extends from the northeast corner of the state toward Indianapolis and continues southward. Interstate 74, Interstate 64, and Interstate 94 serve additional regions. Indianapolis is known as the "Crossroads of America" due to its central location and the convergence of multiple Interstate highways.
The Indiana Toll Road, officially designated as Interstate 80 and Interstate 90, spans approximately 157 miles across northern Indiana. This toll road connects the Illinois border near Chicago with the Ohio border, serving as a major commercial and passenger route. It was opened in 1956 and has undergone various expansions and modernizations.
U.S. Routes in Indiana include U.S. 30, U.S. 31, U.S. 40, and U.S. 41, among others. These highways supplement the Interstate system and provide important connections between communities.
Indiana's state road system comprises over 11,000 miles of highways designated with State Road (SR) numbers. INDOT is responsible for maintenance, construction, and safety improvements on these routes. The agency also manages bridge infrastructure and conducts winter road maintenance operations.
The state has invested in highway modernization projects, including the expansion of I-69 and improvements to aging infrastructure throughout the network.
