About The Outer Banks

The Outer Banks is a 200-mile chain of barrier islands stretching along the coast of North Carolina and southeastern Virginia. These islands play a critical role in separating the Atlantic Ocean from the mainland's estuarine systems. Significant cities and towns of the Outer Banks include Kitty Hawk, Nags Head, Hatteras, and Ocracoke.

Tourism is the primary economy of the Outer Banks. Major attractions include the Wright Brothers National Memorial in Kill Devil Hills, which commemorates the site of the first airplane flight. Cape Hatteras National Seashore offers a combination of expansive beaches, sheltered dunes, and historic lighthouses, making it a focal point for visitors. Recreational activities such as boating, fishing, surfing and wildlife viewing thrive here, and Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge serves as an outstanding ecological site.

Several upscale resorts, especially Duck and Corolla, attract to tourists seeking relaxation and entertainment. The area also emphasizes cultural preservation through historic sites such as Roanoke Island, known for its "Lost Colony" and Elizabethan Gardens.

The television show “Outer Banks”, a popular Netflix series, has brought additional attention to the region. Despite the natural diversity and beauty of the Outer Banks, the show focuses on a fictional treasure hunt, increasing the mystique of the islands to a wider audience.
