Martha's Vineyard consists of six towns: Edgartown, Oak Bluffs, Vineyard Haven (Tisbury), West Tisbury, Chilmark and Aquinnah. Edgartown, the oldest settlement on the island, has well-preserved colonial architecture. Oak Bluffs, known for its Victorian cottages, is a popular tourist center. Ferries run year-round to Vineyard Haven, the island's main port of entry.

Tourism is the backbone of the island's economy, especially during the summer months. Tourists frequently visit its beaches, historical sites, and nature reserves. Highlights include Gay Head Rocks in Aquinnah, which offers panoramic views, and the Polly Hill Arboretum in West Tisbury, which features a variety of plant species. The Martha's Vineyard Museum in Vineyard Haven offers an insight into the island's history and culture.

Major resorts and attractions include the Harbor View Hotel in Edgartown and the Winnetu Oceanside Resort in Katama. Both establishments offer luxurious accommodations and scenic views. The Flying Horse Carousel in Oak Bluffs, the oldest operating platform carousel in the United States, attracts families and history buffs.

The island of Martha's Vineyard also hosts various cultural events, such as the Martha's Vineyard Film Festival and an agricultural fair that celebrates the island's artistic and agrarian heritage.
