The town was originally part of Edgartown and was known as Eastville. It was set off as a separate town called Cottage City in 1880, and was renamed Oak Bluffs in 1907.

Oak Bluffs is known for its gingerbread cottages, a collection of more than 300 brightly painted Victorian-era cottages located in the Martha's Vineyard Camp Meeting Association (MVCMA) area. The cottages grew out of a Methodist summer camp meeting that began in 1835. The camp meeting site, known as Wesleyan Grove, was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2005.

The town is home to the Flying Horses Carousel, built in 1876 and installed in Oak Bluffs in 1884. It is the oldest operating platform carousel in the United States and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1987.

Oak Bluffs has historically been a significant vacation destination for African Americans. Since the late 19th century, the neighborhood known as the Highlands, and later areas including Inkwell Beach, have attracted Black families, writers, and professionals, making Oak Bluffs one of the earliest and most prominent African American summer resort communities in the United States.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 7.6 square miles (19.7 km²), of which 7.4 square miles (19.2 km²) is land and 0.2 square miles (0.5 km²), or 2.51%, is water. The town is bordered by Vineyard Sound and Nantucket Sound to the north, Edgartown to the east and south, and Tisbury to the west.

Oak Bluffs is served by the Steamship Authority, which operates ferry service between the town and Woods Hole on Cape Cod during the seasonal months. The town's harbor is one of the busiest recreational boating harbors on the island.
