About Daniel Island
Daniel Island is a 4,000-acre master-planned community located in the city of Charleston, South Carolina. Situated between the Cooper and Wando Rivers, this island was primarily undeveloped plantation land until the 1990s when it was annexed by the city of Charleston and development began. The island is named after its former owner, Robert Daniel, who acquired the property in the early 18th century.
Geographically, Daniel Island is part of Berkeley County, despite being within Charleston city limits. This unique arrangement came about when the island was annexed by Charleston in 1991. Prior to development, the island was largely used for farming, cattle ranching, and as hunting grounds. The master plan for the island's development was created by the Daniel Island Company in the mid-1990s, with construction beginning in 1996. The community was designed with a "new urbanism" approach that emphasizes walkability, mixed-use development, and public spaces.

Today, Daniel Island features a mix of residential neighborhoods, commercial areas, and recreational facilities. The island's population has grown steadily since development began, with approximately 12,000 residents now calling it home. The community is known for its carefully planned infrastructure, including over 25 miles of walking and biking trails that connect various neighborhoods and amenities.
Notable attractions on Daniel Island include the Credit One Stadium (formerly Volvo Car Stadium), which hosts the annual WTA Credit One Charleston Open tennis tournament and various concerts throughout the year. The island is also home to the Daniel Island Club, featuring two nationally-ranked golf courses designed by Tom Fazio and Rees Jones. Smythe Park is another popular destination with its 22-acre lake, walking trails, and scenic overlooks.
The island features several commercial areas, including Daniel Island Town Center, which serves as the community's downtown district with restaurants, shops, and professional services. Educational facilities on the island include Daniel Island School, a public K-8 institution, and Bishop England High School, a private Catholic school.
While Daniel Island is not known for beaches in the traditional sense, residents enjoy water access via several boat landings and the Daniel Island Waterfront Park along the Wando River. The island's location provides easy access to nearby coastal attractions like Sullivan's Island and Isle of Palms, both approximately 10 miles away.
