About Sullivan's Island
State: South Carolina.
County: Charleston.
Population: ~ 2,000.
Area: 3.5 sq mi (9 sq km).
Sullivan's Island is a town located in Charleston County, South Carolina, United States. It is a barrier island situated at the mouth of Charleston Harbor, separated from the mainland by the Intracoastal Waterway and connected to Mount Pleasant via the Ben Sawyer Bridge.
The island has an area of approximately 3.5 square miles and a population of around 2,000 residents.
Fort Moultrie, one of the most historically significant military fortifications in the United States, is located on Sullivan's Island. The fort was the site of a decisive American victory during the Revolutionary War on June 28, 1776, when colonial forces repelled a British naval assault. The fortification remained in active military use through World War II. Writer Edgar Allan Poe was stationed at Fort Moultrie from 1827 to 1828, and the island later served as the setting for his short story The Gold-Bug (1843).
Historians estimate that 40% of all enslaved Africans brought to North America passed through Sullivan's Island, where they were held in quarantine before being sold at Charleston's slave markets. For this reason, the island is sometimes referred to as the "Ellis Island of Black America."
