Etymology and History
The name "Terre Haute" is French for "high land" or "highland." The area was named by French-Canadian explorers and traders who traveled the Wabash River during the 18th century. The city was officially platted in 1816, the same year Indiana achieved statehood.
During the 19th century, Terre Haute developed as an important center for commerce and transportation. The construction of the Wabash and Erie Canal and the arrival of multiple railroad lines contributed to the city's growth as a manufacturing and industrial hub.
Geography and Climate
Terre Haute covers a total area of approximately 35 square miles. The city experiences a humid continental climate with four distinct seasons, characterized by hot, humid summers and cold winters.
Education
Indiana State University, founded in 1865 as the Indiana State Normal School, is located in Terre Haute. The university serves as one of the city's major educational institutions and employers. The city is also home to Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, consistently ranked among the top undergraduate engineering schools in the United States, and Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College, the oldest Catholic college in Indiana.
Federal Correctional Complex
Terre Haute houses the Federal Correctional Complex, which includes a maximum-security penitentiary. The complex contains the federal death row for male inmates and is the site where federal executions are carried out.
Economy and Culture
Historically, the city's economy was based on manufacturing, coal mining, and agriculture. Today, the economy is more diversified, with education, healthcare, and retail sectors playing significant roles.
