The city's name derives from the Shawnee chief Mishawaka, whose name means "dead trees" or "place of dead trees" in the native language. The area was initially inhabited by Native American tribes, including the Potawatomi, before European settlement began in the early 19th century. Mishawaka was officially incorporated as a town in 1833 and later as a city in 1899.

The St. Joseph River runs through Mishawaka, which historically provided power for mills and industrial facilities. The city developed as an industrial center during the 19th and early 20th centuries, with manufacturing playing a significant role in its economy.

Geography and Location: Mishawaka is situated at approximately 41.66°N latitude and 86.16°W longitude. The city covers a total area of about 18 square miles and sits at an elevation of around 719 feet above sea level. Its proximity to South Bend creates a continuous urban area, though both cities maintain separate municipal governments.
