The village is named after Lake Placid, which is adjacent to the village. The community is also located near Mirror Lake, around which the main commercial district is built. The two lakes are often confused, as Mirror Lake is the one visible from the village center.

Lake Placid hosted the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympic Games, making it one of only three sites to have hosted the Winter Olympics twice, along with St. Moritz, Switzerland, and Innsbruck, Austria. The 1980 Games are remembered for the "Miracle on Ice," when the United States men's ice hockey team defeated the Soviet Union in the medal round.

The area was first settled by Elijah Bennet in 1800. In 1845, abolitionist Gerrit Smith granted tracts of land in the area to formerly enslaved African Americans, establishing a community known as Timbuctoo. Melvil Dewey, creator of the Dewey Decimal System, founded the Lake Placid Club in 1895, which contributed significantly to the village's development as a resort destination.

Lake Placid hosted the 1972 Winter Universiade and the 2023 Winter World University Games. The village is home to the Olympic Center, the Olympic Ski Jumping Complex, Whiteface Mountain, and the Mt. Van Hoevenberg Olympic Sports Complex, which includes bobsled, luge, skeleton, biathlon, and cross-country skiing facilities. These venues continue to host international winter sports competitions.

The village is served by the Adirondack Regional Airport in nearby Lake Clear and by State Routes 73 and 86. Tourism is the primary industry, with visitors drawn year-round to outdoor recreation including skiing, hiking, ice skating, and access to the surrounding Adirondack Park.
