Kokomo was named after Ma-Ko-Ko-Mo, a Miami chief. The city was platted in 1844 and officially incorporated in 1865.
History and Development
The city experienced significant growth during the Indiana Gas Boom of the 1880s, which attracted numerous manufacturing industries to the area. This period of industrial expansion established Kokomo as an important manufacturing center. In 1894, Elwood Haynes, a Kokomo resident, successfully road-tested one of the first commercially successful gasoline-powered automobiles in the United States on Pumpkinvine Pike, now known as Boulevard Street.
Throughout the 20th century, Kokomo became particularly known for its automotive industry presence. The city housed multiple major automotive plants and became a significant manufacturing hub for Chrysler Corporation and its successor companies, producing transmissions and other automotive components.
Economy
The economy of Kokomo has been historically dominated by automotive manufacturing. Major employers have included Chrysler, Delphi Electronics & Safety, and Haynes International. The city experienced economic challenges during the automotive industry downturn in the late 2000s but has worked toward economic diversification in subsequent years.
Geography and Climate
Kokomo covers a total area of approximately 36.79 square miles. The city experiences a humid continental climate with four distinct seasons, characterized by hot summers and cold winters typical of the Midwest region.
