The city is situated at the confluence of three rivers: the St. Joseph River, the St. Marys River, and the Maumee River. This strategic location made it historically important for trade and transportation.

History

Fort Wayne derives its name from General Anthony Wayne, a Revolutionary War hero who ordered the construction of a military fort in the area in 1794. The fort was built near the site of earlier French and British forts. The Miami Native American tribe had inhabited the region for centuries before European settlement, and the area was known as Kekionga, serving as the capital of the Miami nation.

The city was officially incorporated in 1840. Throughout the 19th century, Fort Wayne developed as an important trading post and transportation hub. The completion of the Wabash and Erie Canal in 1843 and the arrival of railroads in the 1850s accelerated its growth significantly.
