The city takes its name from a military post built in 1838 during the Second Seminole War, which itself was named after Lieutenant Colonel Benjamin K. Pierce, brother of U.S. President Franklin Pierce. Fort Pierce was officially incorporated in 1901.
Fort Pierce is served by the Port of Fort Pierce, one of Florida's deepwater ports, and by St. Lucie County International Airport. The Fort Pierce Inlet connects the Indian River Lagoon to the Atlantic Ocean and is a notable navigational feature of the region.
During World War II, the area hosted the U.S. Naval Amphibious Training Base, where Navy frogmen — predecessors of the modern U.S. Navy SEALs — were trained. This history is commemorated at the National Navy UDT-SEAL Museum, located in Fort Pierce and established in 1985.
Notable attractions include the Manatee Observation and Education Center, the A.E. Backus Museum, Heathcote Botanical Gardens, and Fort Pierce Inlet State Park. The city is also recognized as the birthplace of the Highwaymen, a group of African American landscape painters active from the 1950s onward.
The local economy is based on agriculture — particularly citrus production — commercial fishing, tourism, and marine industries. Indian River Citrus, grown in the surrounding area, is internationally known for its quality.
