Geography and Location

Evansville is situated on an oxbow bend in the Ohio River in the southwestern corner of Indiana. The city covers approximately 47 square miles and sits at the border of Indiana, Kentucky, and Illinois. Its position along the river historically made it an important transportation and trade center.

History

The city was founded in 1812 and named after Colonel Robert Morgan Evans. Early settlers were attracted to the area because of its location on the Ohio River, which provided opportunities for trade and transportation. During the 19th century, Evansville became a major manufacturing and transportation center.

In World War II, Evansville was a major center for the production of wartime materiel. The city manufactured P-47 Thunderbolt fighter aircraft and LST landing craft. The Chrysler Corporation operated a large ordnance plant that produced ammunition. This period brought significant economic growth and population increase to the region.

Economy

Evansville has a diverse economy with sectors including manufacturing, healthcare, finance, and education.
