About University Circle
University Circle is a neighborhood and cultural district located on the east side of Cleveland, Ohio, United States, approximately five miles east of downtown. It is one of the largest concentrations of cultural, educational, medical, and religious institutions in the United States within a single square mile.
The district takes its name from a former streetcar turnaround circle that once operated in the area. Its development as an institutional center began in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when several organizations relocated eastward from the increasingly industrial downtown.
University Circle is home to Case Western Reserve University, a private research university, as well as major medical institutions including the Cleveland Clinic and University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center. Cultural anchors include the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, the Cleveland Botanical Garden, and Severance Hall, the home of the Cleveland Orchestra.
Numerous other institutions are situated within the district, among them the Cleveland Institute of Music, the Cleveland Institute of Art, the Western Reserve Historical Society, and the Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage in nearby Beachwood affiliations. The area also contains parkland, gardens, and a collection of religious congregations.
The nonprofit organization University Circle Inc. (UCI), founded in 1957, coordinates development, planning, and shared services for the institutions in the district. Today University Circle remains a hub for education, healthcare, arts, and research, drawing students, patients, employees, and visitors from across the region.
