About Case Western Reserve University
Case Western Reserve University is a private research university in Cleveland, Ohio. It was established in 1967 through the federation of Case Institute of Technology and Western Reserve University, two institutions that had shared adjacent campuses in the University Circle neighborhood for decades.
Western Reserve College was founded in 1826 in Hudson, Ohio, and moved to Cleveland in 1882, at which point it became Western Reserve University. Case School of Applied Science was founded in 1880 through a bequest from the industrialist Leonard Case Jr. The two schools' proximity and cooperation eventually led to their formal merger.
The university is organized into several schools and colleges, including the College of Arts and Sciences, the Case School of Engineering, the Weatherhead School of Management, the School of Law, the School of Medicine, the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing, the School of Dental Medicine, and the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences.
Case Western Reserve is classified among R1 institutions for very high research activity. The university has been associated with numerous Nobel laureates among its faculty and alumni. In 1887, Albert A. Michelson and Edward W. Morley conducted the famous Michelson–Morley experiment on the campus, an experiment that measured the speed of light and became foundational to modern physics.
The campus is located in University Circle, a district containing cultural institutions such as the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Cleveland Orchestra's Severance Hall, and the Cleveland Museum of Natural History. The university's athletic teams, known as the Spartans, compete in NCAA Division III as members of the University Athletic Association.
