About Midway International Airport
Chicago Midway International Airport (MDW) is a major commercial airport located on the southwest side of Chicago, Illinois, approximately 10 miles from downtown Chicago. Originally opened in 1927, it was named Chicago Municipal Airport and later renamed in honor of the World War II Battle of Midway in 1949.
The airport serves as a focus city for Southwest Airlines, which operates the majority of flights from Midway. Other airlines include Delta Air Lines, Alaska Airlines, and Porter Airlines. Midway handles approximately 20 million passengers annually, making it one of the busiest airports in the United States.
Midway International Airport features a single terminal building with three concourses (A, B, and C) and operates five runways. The airport underwent significant renovations in the early 2000s, including the construction of a new terminal that opened in 2001. The facility covers 750 acres and offers various amenities including restaurants, shops, and ground transportation options.
The airport primarily serves domestic destinations across the United States, with limited international service to Canada and seasonal flights to other countries. Chicago Transit Authority provides direct rail service to downtown Chicago via the Orange Line, connecting Midway to the city's public transportation system.
Despite being smaller than Chicago O'Hare International Airport, Midway plays a crucial role in the region's aviation infrastructure and continues to serve as an important gateway for travelers visiting the Chicago metropolitan area.
