About Kampala
Kampala is the capital and largest city of Uganda, located in the Central Region. With a population of approximately 1.7 million people (2019), it serves as the country's economic, political, and cultural center. The city is built on seven hills and spreads across an area of 189 square kilometers.
The city's history dates back to 1890 when it became the capital of the British protectorate. The name Kampala derives from "Kasozi Ka Mpala" (Hill of Antelopes) in the Luganda language, referring to the numerous impala that once roamed the area. Today, Kampala is one of the fastest-growing cities in Africa.
Major landmarks include the Kasubi Tombs (a UNESCO World Heritage site), Uganda National Mosque, and Makerere University (one of East Africa's oldest institutions). The city's commercial district features the Independence Monument and bustling markets like Owino Market.
Kampala's economy is diverse, encompassing finance, telecommunications, retail, and manufacturing sectors. The city serves as Uganda's main transportation hub, with the Entebbe International Airport located 40 kilometers away.
