About Funafuti

Funafuti is the capital city of Tuvalu, located on a narrow coral atoll in the Central Pacific Ocean. The atoll consists of numerous islets surrounding a central lagoon, with the main island of Fongafale hosting most of the city's infrastructure and population of approximately 6,500 people (2017).

The city serves as Tuvalu's main political, economic, and transportation hub. The Funafuti International Airport is the country's only airport, featuring a single runway that occupies a significant portion of the main islet. The city's port, situated in the lagoon, is vital for international trade and local transportation.

Notable landmarks include the Tuvalu Government Building, Vaiaku Lagi Hotel (the only hotel in the country), and the Tuvalu Church (Ekalesia Kelisiano Tuvalu). The Funafuti Conservation Area, established in 1996, covers 33 square kilometers of reef, lagoon, and channel habitats.

Due to its low elevation (maximum height of 2 meters above sea level), Funafuti faces significant challenges from climate change and rising sea levels. The city experiences a tropical climate with consistent temperatures year-round and receives abundant rainfall, averaging 3,500 millimeters annually.
