About Port of Spain
Port of Spain is the capital city of Trinidad and Tobago, located on the northwest coast of Trinidad island. With a population of approximately 50,000 in the city proper and 600,000 in the greater metropolitan area, it serves as the country's main commercial and administrative center.
The city was established by Spanish colonists in the late 16th century and became the capital in 1757. Today, it functions as a major financial services center in the Caribbean region and hosts the headquarters of many national and international corporations.
Among the city's most notable landmarks are the Queen's Park Savannah, which is the world's largest roundabout and the city's largest open space, and the National Academy for the Performing Arts. The Red House, which serves as the seat of Parliament, represents one of the finest examples of early 20th-century architecture in the Caribbean.
Port of Spain features a tropical savanna climate with temperatures remaining relatively constant throughout the year, averaging between 23°C and 32°C. The city experiences two seasons: a dry season from January to May and a wet season from June to December.
The city is also known for hosting one of the Caribbean's largest Carnival celebrations, held annually before Lent. The Emperor Valley Zoo and Royal Botanic Gardens, established in 1891, are among the oldest such facilities in the West Indies. The bustling Central Market serves as a major commercial hub where local produce and crafts are traded.
