About Eswatini
Eswatini, formerly known as Swaziland until 2018, is a landlocked country in Southern Africa, bordered by Mozambique and South Africa. It is one of the smallest countries in Africa, with an area of just 17,364 square kilometers (6,704 sq mi).
Eswatini is one of the world's last remaining absolute monarchies, with King Mswati III ruling since 1986. The country gained independence from British protection in 1968, maintaining its indigenous monarchy system that dates back to the mid-18th century.
The population is approximately 1.25 million people, with most citizens belonging to the Swazi ethnic group. The official languages are Swati and English. The capital city is Mbabane, while the royal and legislative capital is Lobamba.
The country's economy is closely tied to South Africa, with the South African rand accepted as legal tender alongside the local currency, the lilangeni. Eswatini's main economic activities include agriculture, forestry, mining, and manufacturing. Sugar is a major export commodity, and the country is known for its textile industry.
Despite its small size, Eswatini has diverse landscapes, from mountains in the northwest to savanna in the east. The country faces significant challenges, including one of the world's highest HIV/AIDS prevalence rates and substantial income inequality.
