About Khartoum

Khartoum is the capital and largest city of Sudan, located at the confluence of the Blue Nile and White Nile rivers. With a population of over 6 million inhabitants in its metropolitan area, it serves as the political, cultural, and commercial center of the nation.

The city was founded in 1821 as a military outpost of Egypt and became the capital of Sudan under Anglo-Egyptian rule in 1899. The city's name comes from the Arabic "Al-Khartūm", meaning "elephant's trunk", referring to the narrow strip of land between the Blue and White Niles.

Among the city's most notable landmarks are the Presidential Palace, built in 1832, and the National Museum of Sudan, which houses archaeological artifacts spanning thousands of years of Sudanese history. The University of Khartoum, established in 1902, is the oldest and largest university in Sudan. The iconic Great Mosque of Khartoum, constructed in 1900, stands as a significant religious and architectural monument.

Khartoum experiences a hot desert climate with extremely hot summers and mild winters. The average annual temperature is 86°F (30°C), and rainfall is scarce, typically occurring between July and September. The city serves as a major transportation hub, with Khartoum International Airport connecting it to various international destinations.

The city is divided into three main sections: Khartoum proper, Khartoum North (Bahri), and Omdurman, collectively forming the tri-city metropolitan area known as "Greater Khartoum".
