South Sudan Political Map

Description:
This map shows governmental boundaries of countries, states and states capitals, towns, villages, main roads, railroads and airports in South Sudan.

South Sudan, officially the Republic of South Sudan, is divided into 10 states and three administrative areas following the 2020 territorial reorganization. The country's capital and largest city is Juba, located in Central Equatoria State. The nation covers an area of 644,329 square kilometers, making it the 45th largest country in the world.

The ten states are: Central Equatoria, Eastern Equatoria, Western Equatoria, Jonglei, Unity, Upper Nile, Lakes, Western Bahr el Ghazal, Northern Bahr el Ghazal, and Warrap. The three administrative areas consist of Pibor, Ruweng, and Abyei, with Abyei remaining a contested region between South Sudan and Sudan.

Each state is headed by a governor appointed by the president and is further subdivided into counties. The country shares international borders with six nations: Sudan to the north, Ethiopia to the east, Kenya to the southeast, Uganda to the south, the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the southwest, and the Central African Republic to the west. The White Nile (called the Bahr al Jabal in South Sudan) flows north through the country from Uganda to Sudan, serving as a crucial geographical feature that influences administrative boundaries and population distribution.
