South Sudan Physical Map

Description:
This map shows landforms in South Sudan.

South Sudan's physical map reveals diverse geographical features across its territory of 644,329 square kilometers. The country, located in East-Central Africa, is predominantly characterized by tropical savanna and extensive wetlands.

The White Nile (locally known as Bahr al Jabal) flows north through the center of the country, creating the vast Sudd swamp, one of the world's largest wetlands. The Sudd covers approximately 100,000 square kilometers during the wet season, significantly impacting the region's climate and biodiversity.

The country's elevation varies considerably, with the highest point being Mount Kinyeti at 3,187 meters (10,456 feet) in the Imatong Mountains near the Uganda border. The Ironstone Plateau dominates the country's southwest, while the plains of the White Nile Basin occupy the central regions. The eastern part features the Didinga Hills and the western region includes portions of the Congo-Nile watershed.

Several tributaries of the Nile, including the Sobat River and Bahr el Ghazal, create extensive floodplains that characterize much of the northern regions. The country's lowest point is at 381 meters above sea level in the White Nile basin.
