About Juba
Juba is the capital and largest city of South Sudan, located on the White Nile River. With a population of approximately 525,000 (2017 estimate), it serves as the country's economic and administrative center. The city became the capital of South Sudan when the country gained independence from Sudan in 2011.
Founded as a small trading post in the 1920s during the Anglo-Egyptian colonial period, Juba grew significantly following the 1972 Addis Ababa Agreement. The city's infrastructure has been developing rapidly since South Sudan's independence, although it still faces numerous challenges related to urban planning and basic services.
The city features several notable landmarks, including the All Saints Cathedral, built in 1972, and the Juba Bridge, which connects the city across the White Nile. The Dr. John Garang Mausoleum, dedicated to the former leader of the Sudan People's Liberation Movement, serves as an important historical monument. The Juba Market is the city's primary commercial center, where locals trade various goods and traditional crafts.
Juba experiences a tropical wet and dry climate, with the highest temperatures occurring between February and March. The city is served by Juba International Airport, which connects South Sudan with other African nations and international destinations. The University of Juba, established in 1975, is the country's primary institution of higher education.
