Somaliland is a self-declared state located in the northern part of Somalia, in the Horn of Africa. It borders Ethiopia to the west, Djibouti to the northwest, the Gulf of Aden to the north, and the autonomous Puntland region of Somalia to the east.

The territory covers an area of approximately 137,600 square kilometers (53,128 square miles). Its capital and largest city is Hargeisa. Somaliland occupies the territory of the former British Somaliland protectorate, which merged with Italian Somaliland in 1960 to form Somalia. Following the Somali Civil War, Somaliland declared independence in 1991, though it remains internationally unrecognized.
