About Hargeisa
Hargeisa is the capital and largest city of Somaliland, a self-declared state internationally recognized as an autonomous region of Somalia. Located in the Woqooyi Galbeed region, the city serves as the main urban center and economic hub of Somaliland, with an estimated population of around 1.2 million inhabitants as of 2019.
The city's history dates back to the colonial period when it was established as a major watering point and trading post by the British Somaliland Protectorate in the 19th century. During the Somali Civil War in the late 1980s, Hargeisa suffered extensive damage, with approximately 90% of the city destroyed. However, since the 1990s, it has undergone significant reconstruction and development efforts.
The city features several notable landmarks and institutions. The Hargeisa War Memorial, featuring a crashed MiG fighter jet mounted on a pedestal, stands as a symbol of the city's resilience and commemorates the civil war victims. The Saryan Museum houses important historical artifacts and documents relating to Somaliland's history. The city is also home to the University of Hargeisa, established in 2000, which serves as the region's primary institution of higher education.
Hargeisa's economy is primarily based on commerce and livestock trade. The Waaheen Market, which was one of the largest markets in the Horn of Africa before its destruction by fire in 2022, played a crucial role in the city's economic activities. The city also hosts the Hargeisa International Airport, which connects Somaliland to various international destinations.
The climate in Hargeisa is semi-arid, characterized by hot temperatures throughout the year. The city experiences two distinct wet seasons: the Gu (April-June) and the Deyr (October-November). Despite water scarcity challenges, the city has developed various water management systems, including the rehabilitation of colonial-era water infrastructure.
