Sierra Leone Physical Map

Description:
This map shows landforms in Sierra Leone.

Sierra Leone's physical geography features four main regions: the coastal plains, interior lowlands, interior plateau, and mountains. The coastal area consists of mangrove swamps and sandy beaches stretching approximately 400 kilometers along the Atlantic Ocean.

The highest point in Sierra Leone is Mount Bintumani, also known as Loma Mansa, reaching 1,945 meters (6,381 feet) above sea level. It is part of the Loma Mountains range located in the northeastern region of the country. The Tingi Mountains in the east form another significant highland area, with peaks reaching up to 1,853 meters (6,079 feet).

The country's river system is extensive, with major rivers including the Rokel, Sewa, and Moa. These rivers flow from the interior plateau through the lowlands to the Atlantic Ocean. The interior plateau, which covers much of the country, averages 300 meters (984 feet) in elevation and is characterized by rolling plains and occasional hills.

Sierra Leone's landscape also includes the Peninsula Mountains near Freetown, rising to heights of 888 meters (2,913 feet). The Western Area Peninsula contains some of the country's last remaining coastal rainforest. Numerous islands dot the coastline, with the Banana Islands and Turtle Islands being the most prominent.

The country experiences a tropical climate with distinct wet and dry seasons, which significantly influences its physical geography and vegetation patterns. The natural vegetation varies from coastal mangroves through rainforest to savanna in the north.
