About Saint Pierre and Miquelon

Saint Pierre and Miquelon is a French territorial collectivity located in the northwestern Atlantic Ocean near the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. This archipelago consists of eight islands, with Saint Pierre and Miquelon being the main inhabited ones. The territory covers 93 square miles (242 square kilometers).

The capital, Saint-Pierre, sits on the smaller Saint-Pierre Island and serves as the commercial and administrative center. The territory has a population of approximately 6,000 people, with about 5,500 residing in Saint-Pierre and the remainder on Miquelon-Langlade.

The economy relies primarily on fishing, fish processing, and tourism. The territory maintains a modern fishing port and fish processing facilities. The service sector, particularly public administration and tourism, employs a significant portion of the workforce. The Euro serves as the official currency, making it the only territory in North America where the Euro is legal tender.

Tourism plays an increasingly important role in the local economy. Visitors come to experience the unique French atmosphere in North America, explore the distinctive architecture, and enjoy outdoor activities. Major attractions include the L'Arche Museum, the lighthouse at Pointe aux Canons, and various hiking trails across both islands. The territory offers opportunities for whale watching, bird watching, and sport fishing. Several small hotels and bed-and-breakfasts accommodate tourists throughout the year.

The climate is maritime subarctic, characterized by mild summers and long, cold winters. Despite its northern location, the territory benefits from the warming effects of the Gulf Stream, which prevents extreme temperature variations.
