About Saint Lucia
Saint Lucia is a sovereign island country located in the West Indies in the eastern Caribbean Sea. The island sits on the boundary of the Caribbean Sea and Atlantic Ocean. Martinique lies to the north, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines to the south.
The nation covers an area of 238 square miles (617 square kilometers) and has a population of approximately 184,000 (2021 estimate). Castries, the capital and largest city, contains about one-third of the country's population and serves as its main commercial hub and cruise ship port.
The island's geography features the Pitons (Gros Piton and Petit Piton), two volcanic spires that rise from the sea and reach heights of approximately 2,530 feet (771 meters) and 2,438 feet (743 meters) respectively. These UNESCO World Heritage sites represent the island's most recognizable landmarks. The island also contains a drive-in volcano and sulfur springs near the town of Soufrière.
Saint Lucia's economy relies primarily on tourism and banana exports. The tourism sector generates about 65% of the GDP, with manufacturing and agriculture contributing significant portions. The island attracts visitors with its tropical beaches, luxury resorts, and natural attractions. Major tourist destinations include Rodney Bay, Marigot Bay, and the Sulphur Springs.
The official language is English, though many locals speak Saint Lucian Creole French (Kwéyòl). The country maintains a parliamentary democracy within the Commonwealth realm, recognizing King Charles III as head of state. The island experiences a tropical climate with a dry season from December to May and a wet season from June to November.
The main transportation hub, Hewanorra International Airport, handles most international flights, while George F. L. Charles Airport serves regional traffic. The island's infrastructure includes a road network connecting major towns and tourist areas, though mountainous terrain presents development challenges.
